Design Arena Methodology

Leaderboard

Rankings emerge from collective community preferences rather than curated opinions. Each pairwise comparison is weighted equally.

The Elo score is approximated through the Bradley-Terry model. The model estimates each model's inherent strength through an iterative algorithm that converges when strength estimates stabilize (threshold: 0.0001) or reaches 200 iterations.

For each model, the algorithm updates its strength based on total wins divided by the sum of comparison probabilities across all opponents. Strengths are normalized to prevent numerical drift, then converted to ratings using the formula Rating = 400 × log₁₀(strength). Participants with fewer than the minimum threshold of votes (fifteen as of Oct. 12, 2025) are removed before the strength score is computed.

The win rates show the percentage of head-to-head victories each model achieves. Each pairwise comparison (vote) is weighted equally with no filtering or editorial adjustment. Leaderboards and bar charts filter out models with fewer than 15 pairwise comparisons. Margin of error is calculated with an approximate 95% Wilson score confidence interval.

The leaderboard is updated with live results every two hours. Models with fewer than 50 votes are flagged with the "new" tag to indicate expected fluctuation.

Tournament

Tournament selection uses active sampling, and all configurations are publicly documented. Model selection is stochastic but biased toward models where additional comparisons are expected to be most informative. The bracket arrangement also maximizes information gain to help rankings converge faster.

1) The user selects a desired category.

This category determines the arena that the vote will count towards (Model, Image, Video, Builder, Agent, etc.).

2) The user submits an input prompt.

This prompt is limited to remain under 5k characters moderated by the aforementioned

Users are given the option to enhance their prompts via an "enhance prompt" button that makes a call to gemini-2.5-flash-lite-preview-09-2025. This model was selected for cost purposes.

3) Models are recruited at random to respond to the models.

The exact number of models differs by arena category. The following is an example of the head-to-head matchups in Model Arena, where each voting session randomly selects four models from the active pool, plus one backup. All models receive identical prompts and generate responses simultaneously.

The first two models to complete are presented anonymously. When a choice is made between these two designs, that pairwise comparison becomes one vote in the system. The process repeats with the next two models, generating another vote. Winners and losers are then matched, creating additional pairwise votes until complete first through fourth place rankings are established.

Model identities remain hidden throughout evaluation to prevent brand bias. Every pairwise comparison result feeds directly into the leaderboard calculations. Results are shown at the same time to prevent speed-based bias, although this may change in the future.

Arena-specific methodology

Model Arena

Participation requirement: If and only if the participant can accept a text input and return a single-file html/js/css code file.

System Prompts

Kept constants across providers to minimize bias.

The exact, always-up-to-date system prompts for each single-turn HTML arena are published here: designarena.ai/system-prompts (rendered directly from our source code). For agentic-evaluation system prompts, contact founders@intelligence.ai.

Active model configs

Active model configs Sampling and output-token limits aren't standardized to a single value - they follow each model/provider's configuration. Temperature defaults to the provider's own default unless explicitly overridden per model. Output-token (max_tokens) limits are set per provider to avoid cutoffs on generated content and vary by provider/model (some providers require an explicit maximum). Reasoning/"thinking" models use their required settings (e.g. temperature = 1).

Builder Arena

Participation requirement: If and only if the participant can accept a text input and return a web application as a deployed URL link. This is distinct from the single-file html/js/css outputs returned by participants in Model Arena.
